[Indifferent side glance] it just takes up precious parking I could use for 3 paseos.

I was just wondering why she’d want you to get another truck because you have two already.

I’m facing a similar issue. A year and a half ago I bought an SUV, my partner needed wheels he could drive (he can’t drive a manual) and my truck was getting worn out from too many miles as a daily driver, so was my wallet paying for the gas. We compromised on what we wanted for a second vehicle, but he mostly got what he wanted. My wants were better fuel economy and paying cash... I got better fuel economy. At the time I told him since he’s getting most of what he wants in the vehicle the next car is my choice.

Now because fuel costs are not an issue any more, and I was able to get some of the major issues on my truck fixed I’m back driving it as a DD. Unfortunately I’m fearing that all those miles are going to take a toll on my old truck that is just not worth the cost. My partner has suggested I get another truck. I’m not crazy about that, when I said the next vehicle is my choice I was not thinking replacing my truck. The problem is we need a truck, but I don’t need a truck as a DD.

At the moment I can’t afford the car I would prefer to get. Hell I can’t afford to get a truck to replace my current truck. And if something major happens to my truck, which is likely using it as a DD like I am, I probably won’t be able to afford the repair.

I've considered getting a real cheap beater as a DD so I can get the truck running better, but I can see my partner saying ok time to replace the SUV with what I want, and I'll never end up with the car I'd like.

I think it’s that he wants another truck and the wife’s conditions are that he sells the one he already has first.

Rather than sell the truck, you could just give it to me! Everyone wins!

I'd be happy to store any additional vehicles here, free of charge...

Cheap beater sounds nice, but as someone who has done that for years... you really should just get something you’d be willing to keep long term if necessary

Only buy cars you want to drive. If driving a “cheap beater” will be nicer than driving your truck, go for it, but it’s going to be tough, really tough, to own a complete second car and “save money” in the long run versus maintaining and driving one car. Unless your truck is a total pig and you drive a lot of miles; registration, insurance, maintenance and initial cost, are going to add up to more then maintenance + lower fuel economy.

That metric goes out the window if you buy a second car you really like. For instance, my combo is Tacoma/Miata. Sure it costs me more than just owning one car, but I get so much joy from both.
